If I can’t leave my house to go to my lawyer’s office to sign my Will, how can I plan for my future?
Laws are already in effect allowing notaries to remotely notarize documents through secure video conference technology. However, the law does not currently allow remote witnessing of wills, trusts, powers of attorney and advanced directives for health care. All of these documents require witnesses who are not notaries and who are present in the room with the person signing.
There is good news. Legislation to remedy this and allow remote witnessing of documents has finally cleared both the Vermont Senate and House. It is currently awaiting the Governor’s signature.
